I hear that the first view of
Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate is the "million $$$" view, but sadly, I saw nothing but clouds. At first,
dissapointment and anger engulfed me, especially, having made an arduous 4 day journey through the Inca trails and be robbed of the first sight of
Machu Picchu, but looking back, now that I have had time to think, digest, and see pictures, I beg to differ. We had 3 beautiful, blue skies during our 4 day Inca Trail hike and the final day, the day we see
Machu Picchu, we got rained out. I might have missed the million $$$ view but to see the Lost-city emerge out of the clouds when the sun slowly teased us with her appearance was just as spectacular. The three hours we were there seemed a
blurr but what still resides in my heart is the prolific experience of feeling connected to the country, the
culture, and its people. I am still at a disbelief that I hiked in the same footsteps of the ancient Inca people. The appreciation for
Machu Picchu is heightened when one endures that 4 day journey and for that I am glad I did the hiking trip (Thanks
Rajeev for instilling that desire in me, especially after you shared your experience and trip pictures). I want to say, "we were at the hands of nature". "
Pachha-mama" (
meaning "mother nature" in
Quecha/Spanish) had her own plans. I am thankful for having been able to see and experience what I did while at
Machu Picchu. And as I trotted to catch the 11 am train back to civilization, I whispered to
Machu Picchu "I will be back
Machu Picchu ...next time with my mom to show her what you showed me". See you soon.
